Who Benefits

They often lack basic literacy and numeracy skills, suffer from low self esteem, and experience social exclusion as a result. Often there is little or no parental support and few positive role models to raise aspirations. This can be made worse when struggling with the effects of poverty, drugs and alcohol.  

The Stables is a popular community facility that has a particular appeal to young people, including the most excluded individuals. Our core values are community involvement and social inclusion. Activities are designed to be fun, healthy and varied using the appeal of the horse to promote youth and volunteer development.
Whilst the Stables offers access across the community, a key strand of the work at Stepney Bank Stables is support for children, young people, and families who are living in areas of need and who would not otherwise have the opportunity to access leisure facilities, training, or socialize together. We also do a lot of work with schools and groups who are working with the same audience as ourselves.


The majority of our users are therefore under 18 and live in some of the most deprived wards in the region. Many have emotional and behavioural problems, some would be described as “at risk” and a number have been excluded from school. Approximately 10% of our users would be classified as having some form of disability.

Stepney Bank Stables has developed from a volunteer-run project to a unique community facility with registered charitable status.  The majority of regular users and volunteers at the Stables are young people with personal,
