Famous Five Picnic
Many moons ago, Rachel, star of “The Stables” and chief organiser of the Stepney Bank Book Club came up with the idea of celebrating World Book Day by going on a Famous Five style picnic.
Months of preparation ensued, meetings were held, discussions made and lists were drawn up. We finally decided on the following:-
Where? - Holy Island
When? - As World Book Day was on March 3rd we thought we would postpone our picnic until the Easter Holidays when it would be a bit warmer.
What to eat? - Crusty bread, jam, honey, potted meat, corned beef, strawberries and cream and of course lashings of ginger beer!
What to wear? - get dressed up as characters from children’s books.
What to say!!? - “ripping”, “ra-ther” and “lashings of ginger beer”.
0n April 4th the great day dawned and we all donned our outfits. I was the Big Bad Wolf, Rachel Pongwiffy, Sarah and Rosie Meg and Mog, Alice and Rebecca Flopsy Bunnies, Rachel (sister of Sarah and Rebecca) The Cheshire Cat and we also had some cowardly lions who didn’t get dressed up at all!
When we got to Holy Island it was freezing! We set down our picnic near the beach and we huddled round trying to keep warm. The food looked fantastic lying on the gingham picnic cloth and we had a wonderful time demolishing all the tempting food. (But whose idea was it about the potted meat and the corned beef? – everyone refused to even look at it!)
We ended the day by playing games on the field. Goodness knows what the locals thought when they saw a 5ft 6 wolf running around. Everyone else by this time had cast aside their fancy dress and had their civvies on. It started raining so we rushed back to the cars for the long journey home and started making plans for our next exciting episode with the Book Club.
