Newbiggin Children Get Eco-started

21 June 2007

Windsor First School has been going recycling crazy in a full week of green-themed activities organised by Northumberland County Council.

Activities for Eco-Start Week the school, in Newbiggin by the Sea, were organised by waste management officers at the county council. Workshops got youngsters making music out of recyclable materials and designing cloth bags to cut down the use of plastic shopping bags, and lots of lively discussion.

Ian Carroll, Deputy Headteacher at Windsor First School, said: “We wanted our pupils to learn about why recycling is important. The week was a huge success, and the children tell me they enjoyed every minute and are much more aware of how they can contribute to helping the environment.”

Lorna Blenkinsop, Waste Education and Awareness Officer for Northumberland County Council, said: “The week’s activities were part of Northumberland County Council’s Eco-Start Project, which works with first schools and special schools to raise awareness of recycling and help reduce waste going to landfill. We hope that by working closely with schools in all of our 26 belonging communities we’ll help enthuse children about being green.”

By the end of July, 68 first schools and special schools will have taken part in the Eco-Start waste and recycling project.
