Newbiggin Pupils Hit The Duvet For Book Day

07 March 2007

Children at a Newbiggin first school have gone to bed to celebrate the biggest annual event promoting reading.

A special event held at Windsor First School in Newbiggin to mark the tenth birthday of World Book Day celebrated what’s great about bedtime reading. The whole school, including teachers, turned up for class wearing pyjamas and slippers for a readathon snuggled up on duvets in the school hall.

With activities including a visit to the library, mask-making of favourite storybook characters and older pupils reading stories to younger pupils, the event was hailed as about as far from a snooze-fest as it’s possible to get.

Kath Gray, Literacy Coordinator at Windsor First School, said: “The event helped show pupils that reading is fun, and was a huge success. They really enjoyed the activities, especially wearing their pyjamas to school, and left school thinking there’s nothing better than snuggling up with a good book.”

This is one of a number of events held in schools and libraries across Northumberland in celebration of World Book Day.
